2012 Preakness Stakes Betting Lines

If it wasn’t already enough of a longshot to win the Triple Crown, the horse who won the first leg seems to have made it a complete improbability.

No slight against I’ll Have Another. What a great race he had to beat one of the strongest fields this decade. But colts like Bodemeister and Union Rags already seemed destined for greatness this year with strong careers as 3-year olds, and they would have made it interesting to see if we had our first Triple Crown since 1978.

Instead, I’ll Have Another is the only one with a crack at it this year after becoming the first horse ever to win out of the 19th position. He was a 15/1 longshot to win the Kentucky Derby.

Triple Crown Betting Lines already had it as a longshot for any horse to win all three races.

But it’s hard to imagine I’ll Have Another having, well, just that in three weeks: another great run at Preakness Stakes and winning two of the first three legs.

The horse’s trainers are hoping a quick head start will do the trick. I’ll Have Another has already landed in Baltimore and is preparing at Pimlico Race Course, just a day after winning the Kentucky Derby.

It’s the quickest any horse has arrived after winning since Monarchos in 2001.

“We discussed a few plans and we just thought the more time here to get used to the surface, the better for him,” assistant trainer Jack Sisterson said. “Every trainer has a different training style. I suppose it’s better to get the horse used to the surface and things like that. So, he’s here now, and we’re excited to have him here for the two weeks.”

It’s a non-tradiitional approach the team is hoping that will defy the odds once again. They’re even lodging him in Stall 17, instead of Stall 40 were Derby winners are traditionally held. The reason?

“I suppose it’s like a human. You want to try and get your rest,” Sisterson said. “If you’ve got 50 million people outside your bedroom, stopping and peeking every single day, you wouldn’t get much sleep, would you? I suppose being out of the way, getting him to relax and being himself, is better for the horse.”

The 3-year old is apparently in high spirits after landing, and likes all the travel and attention.

“He loves to fly. His ears were pricked,” Sisterson said. “We were getting a police escort and there were people in the streets chanting, ‘I’d love another.’ He knows that’s him. His ears were pricked and he’s bobbing his head, going, ‘Yeah, that’s me.'”
