We’ve spent a long time talking about the favorites to win the 2012 Kentucky Derby and it’s all starting to turn into drivel. Union Rags and Bodemeister are clearly the frontrunners to capture the crown on Saturday, and the actual odds will only depend on the positions drawn on Wednesday.
But what about the dark horses? Trinniberg’s training team feels “100 percent” that their colt will win the race because of his world-class speed that could force other horses to chase and exhaust early on. But there are a couple others that could make some noise on Saturday if they get a really good draw. And we’re not talking about Gemologist.
Daddy Long Legs is about as big a longshot as you’ll find on Bovada’s Kentucky Derby Futures, but that could be because he’s a relative unknown in the American circuit. He’s won three of five career races and has the endurance to hang with the pack at the Downs. The son of Scat Daddy won the Grade II UAE Derby at 1 3/6 miles at Dubai.
Take Charge Indy is another interesting name because he actually beat Union Rags by more than a length at the Florida Derby a couple weeks ago. He’s got the speed and will be balanced by jockey Calvin Borel, who has some serious Derby experience. Borel won the thing three years ago atop Mine That Bird, and will be able to stay out of traffic problems.
He’ll have about the same odds as Alpha, who is trained by Kiaran McLaughlin. Despite a starting error, he finished second at Wood Memorial to Gemologist. He faced similar competition in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile and finished 11th, so he won’t get real good odds to win, which could mean a big payout. With Rajiv Maragh riding him this week during practice, Alpha was the fastest colt over five furlongs and has a Beyer speed figure of 98.
Union Rags and Bodemeister will get all the attention this week, maybe even Gemologist. But don’t sleep on the rest of the list, which could probvide a nice payday on Bovada.
