Bodemeister Officially Favored To Win 2012 Kentucky Derby

Trainer Bob Baffert has been trying to take it easy ever since suffering a heart attack in Dubai last month. His horse, Bodemeister, has done his part so far with dominating performances in his prep races. The duo got another breath of fresh air on Wednesday as they avoided the dreaded no. 1 post position for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.

He will start out of the sixth position, where six winners have come from, which is good enough to make him the favorite for the race.

Bodemeister is now your official favorite on Bovada’s Kentucky Derby Futures odds, at 4/1. That’s just narrowly better than Union Rags, who’s getting 9/2 odds on Bovada.

Union Rags, who will run in the fourth positoin, could have been labeled the favorite if Bodemeister hadn’t gotten a good draw.

“I wanted to make them co-favorites,” Churchhill Downs oddsmaker Mike Battaglia told Seattle PI. “I haven’t been this close on two horses since Curlin and Street Sense (in 2007). I wanted to make them co-favorites and I didn’t. They went off 10 cents apart.”

Although so close together, Bodemeister has proven to be the stronger horse as of late, blowing out the field in the Arkansas Derby by 9 1/2 lengths. Still, Baffert has been in this position before, when he brought heavily favored Lookin At Lucky in 2010. The colt drew the inside position and was trapped on the rail the whole race, finishing sixth.

“At least we’re in a position where we have a good chance of winning,” Baffert said. “If I got the one-hole I would be thinking they just don’t want me to win this Derby. After Lookin At Lucky, when he got the one-hole, the excitement just left me because I knew he had too much to overcome.”

Hansen, who many have pegged to contend for the title, almost drew the inside position, but wound up 14th. Despite no winner coming from 14 in 51 years, owner Dr. Kendall Hansen was relieved with the spot.

“I don’t know why I just felt lucky. I was pulling for that from the beginning — 14 or 15,” Hansen told the PI. “You have to breathe through times like that, but yeah, it was interesting. I had a good feeling, though.”

Hansen is getting 10/1 odds to win the race, just behind Gemologist (6-1) who runs in the 15th position.

Daddy Long Legs ended up with the first position, and is a 30/1 longshot.
