Trinniberg Owner ‘100 Percent’ Sure He Will Win Kentucky Derby

We know Churchhill Downs is making its final preparations in choosing its official frontrunner to win the 2012 Kentucky Derby this weekend. But that’s a waste of time according to Bisnath Parbhoo. He apparently already knows who is going to win the Derby – his son’s horse Trinniberg.

“The way he’s training now, I’m 100 percent certain he’s going to win,” Parboo said, according to an article in the Chicago Sun-Times. “He’s doing everything right. We couldn’t ask for nothing more. Nothing more.”

That would make Trinniberg a huge value bet in most circles. Bovada’s Kentucky Derby Futures has had him as a longshot for a while, but the betting site won’t officially give its leaderboard until Wednesday.

Boastful, but not completely out of character for the Parbhoo family.

Bisnath is reportedly a simple guy who refused to stay in a luxurious hotel when he first arrived in the United States. His documentation had his name spelled wrong, and he didn’t care enough to have it corrected. This is a guy who is plain. His son Shivananda Parbhoo is, too, purchasing the colt by chance for just over $21,000.

When asked if he had a knack for picking great horses, Shivananda shrugged it off.

“I can’t look at $500,000 horses,” he said.

It might not be that far fetched to think of Trinniberg as a darkhorse to overtake Bodemeister or Union Rags. The colt has led at some point in all seven of his career races. The problem has been endurance, but his team is working on that. When jockey Willie Martinez took over, Trinniberg won his last two races. He won by a combined nine lengths at Swale at Gulfstream Park and Bay Shore at Aqueduct.

“It’s an obvious question. Distance, distance, will he get the distance? That’s what everybody’s wondering,” Martinez said. “The only thing that I can say from my side, the rider’s point of view, there’s no better feeling for a rider than when the horse relaxes, especially going two turns and especially when everybody’s expecting you to be on the pace.”

Since he’s been able to jump out to such big leads, there’s a chance he will force Bodemeister or Hansen, two speedsters to chase and exhaust too quickly.

Of course, post position isn’t drawn until Wednesday when we will get a feel for what actually might happen. That’s when the Downs will choose its official favorite, and Bovada will make a clearer leaderboard.

Still, Parbhoo can dream.

“This is a race that you dream it, you chase it and you want to taste it. That’s how I am right now. I’m just like Trinniberg, I’m champing at the bit to get a taste of it,” Martinez said. “We don’t have to worry about nothing so we’re just going to go out there and have fun, take what they’re going to give us and hopefully everybody else will expect to come back. He could rain on a lot of people’s parades.”
